Technology is changing the face of marketing to an extent that expectations, skills and job description have changed compared to just 5 years ago. Today, marketers need to understand trends and technology. Marketing is more than marketing

fraMarketing has become more than just marketing. With the explosion of communication channels , the chief marketing officer needs to truly understand the customer’s journey. Marketing is responsible for the brand and the customer experience is your brand. But marketing is not always at the frontlines of interaction with the customer. But it should be. Marketing needs to forge partnerships with sales, customer service, and product development. In order to deliver not only a great but specifically relevant customer experience, a collaborative process needs to be established from product development, to IT to marketing and sales departments that are “selling” the same message. Every CMO should ask themselves and their organizations the big questions. Why are we doing this? What’s the value to our cutsomer? And how will this add to our efforts?

Living in a Digital Economy with Analog Boards

analogIt’s been a while since my last blog – summer is turning out to be busier than I thought! Russell Reynolds Associates 2012 Study of Digital Directors did catch my eye this month though.

In today’s world, the CEO should also be the chief digital visionary in order to be able to lead the company’s digital transformation. And if this is not yet the case, companies – large and small – definitely need to start building their digital capabilities in order to remain competitive in this ever increasing technological environment. It was not surprising to read that almost all of the “highly digital” boards were in the U.S, with only two in Europe and none in Asia.

Technology is creating new ecosystems and opportunities. And these opportunities also demand the need for thoughtful investments. So in order to fully take adavantage of what our new digital world has to offer, CEOs and management boards need to start to adapt.

It’s time for management to become digital visionaries!

Rufus Wainwright rocks Gibson

ImageIt has been just over a week but Rufus Wainwright rocked the Gibson Club in Frankfurt. I truly admire his career and his wild creativity. He is this great combination of baroque, pop, opera, showtunes and general drama queen. His new album – produced by Mark Ronson – sets a new tonality and he played almost the whole album during the show.

Part of it all were not only his husband, Jörn Weisbrodt, but his in-laws  which gave the concert this touch of cuteness as the audience below tried to steal secret glances at the family hanging out on the balcony. And it truly is a family affair with Adam Cohen joining the show and a tribute to all their parents’ creative heritage being paid.

His band is tight, full of amazing talent. They all seem to know it and yet gel bringing over their passion into the audience. And when it comes to do the encore, it is an encore only Rufus could coreograph and is too crazy, too amazing and too complex to really tell anyone about who was not there.  Wow.

In light of the Gangnam style craze….

I got into a cab the other day, Gangnam style was blasting and in my head I was singing along when the driver turned around to look at me and say ‘I am a musician, do you think this is music?’.

I guess we are all struck by the Gangnam style craze. Even Bill O’Reilly of FOX News fame got into it the other day, trying to analyze what this is all about. Obviously he feels the whole thing is madness. Plus, it is “without intelligible words, to some extent.”

So I started doing some research. Well it is in another language so that may explain it. And Gangnam is actually a ritzy neighborhood in South Korea. And the lyrics show it is all about a boy and a girl and the hotness that ensues.

O’Reilly called Psy to be a “fat little guy… jumping up and down,” and admitted there’s not really anything wrong with the video since, “you might lose a few pounds jumping up and down like a pony.” So at least some good can come out of it all in the end.

So, Bill (and anyone else interested) here is the English translation…..

Oppa is Gangnam style
Gangnam style

A girl who is warm and human during the day
A classy girl who know how to enjoy the freedom of a cup of coffee
A girl whose heart gets hotter when night comes
A girl with that kind of twist

I’m a guy
A guy who is as warm as you during the day
A guy who one-shots his coffee before it even cools down
A guy whose heart bursts when night comes
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

A girl who looks quiet but plays when she plays
A girl who puts her hair down when the right time comes
A girl who covers herself but is more sexy than a girl who bares it all
A sensible girl like that

I’m a guy
A guy who seems calm but plays when he plays
A guy who goes completely crazy when the right time comes
A guy who has bulging ideas rather than muscles
That kind of guy

Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Beautiful, loveable
Yes you, hey, yes you, hey
Now let’s go until the end

Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style, Gangnam style
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two
On top of the running man is the flying man, baby baby
I’m a man who knows a thing or two

You know what I’m saying
Oppa is Gangnam style

Eh- Sexy Lady, Oppa is Gangnam style
Eh- Sexy Lady oh oh oh oh

Took a short break

So I just returned from a sailing trip to Croatia. Starting off in my home harbor of Grado, Italy, I sailed 220 km all round hitting Umag, Novigrad, Rovinj, Pula and gorgeous Porec before heading back home. What a lovely place Croatia is. Friendly people, good food, amazing culture, beautiful towns and clear blue waters. And even the waves and storms that hit were a fun challenge that was managed by all including my own sea wolf, Ginger. Now it is back to consulting and making the communications world turn.
